Starlight
Our perception of the universe is governed almost solely by the electromagnetic radiation we receive from cosmic objects. The Sun is the source of all our power, but the Earth receives only a tiny fraction of the energy radiated by our closest star into space. When we look at other more distant stars, which shine because they are hot, the light we collect can tell us much about them, such as their luminosity, size, temperature and distance.
