The sensor unit arrived on 15 November 2013 in a drainpipe, with the following instructions from Dr Steve Marple of Lancaster University.
Parcel one (large):
This is the enclosure (pipe). Remove external packing. Unscrew the cap (keep, and do not loose inner plug or rubber o-ring) to access the batteries, aurorawatch publicity cards and Raspberry Pi power supply. You can remove the double socket coupler if you can't get the parts out of the hole.
Do not remove the wooden frame (see attached photo) from the tube. Inside the wooden frame are bags containing rock wool for insulation (do not open them). The tube can be installed with the wooden frame in place. Do not remove the sealing plug from the other end of the tube.
